Canada Expands Super Visa Health Insurance Options for Indian Applicants

In a significant policy update effective January 28, 2025, Canada has broadened the health insurance options for Super Visa applicants, including those from India. Previously, applicants were required to obtain health insurance exclusively from Canadian providers. Now, they can purchase private health insurance from authorized foreign insurers, making the Super Visa more accessible to Indian families.

Canada Expands Super Visa Health Insurance Options for Indian Applicants

Understanding the Super Visa

The Super Visa is a multiple-entry visa that allows parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to visit Canada for extended periods. Holders can stay for up to five years per visit, with the possibility of extending their stay while in Canada. This visa is particularly beneficial for Indian families seeking to maintain close family ties across borders.

New Health Insurance Flexibility

Under the revised regulations, Super Visa applicants can now obtain health insurance from foreign companies, provided these insurers meet specific criteria:

  • Authorization:  The insurance company must be authorized by the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) to provide accident and sickness insurance.
  • Listing: The insurer should appear on OSFI’s list of federally regulated financial institutions.
  • Policy Issuance: The policy must be issued under the company's insurance business in Canada.
Applicants can verify if a foreign insurance company meets these criteria by consulting the OSFI website.

Health Insurance Requirements

Regardless of the insurer's origin, the health insurance policy must:
  • Be valid for at least one year from the date of entry into Canada.
  • Cover healthcare, hospitalization, and repatriation.
  • Provide a minimum coverage of CAD 100,000.
Super Visa holders should ensure their health insurance remains valid throughout their stay in Canada. If the coverage expires before departure, they may need to renew their policy to maintain compliance.

Benefits for Indian Families

This policy change offers greater flexibility and potentially more affordable insurance options for Indian applicants. By allowing the purchase of health insurance from authorized foreign providers, Canada is facilitating easier family reunification while ensuring that visitors have adequate health coverage during their stay.

Indian families planning to apply for the Super Visa should review these updated insurance requirements and consult with authorized insurance providers to select a policy that meets Canadian standards. Staying informed about these changes can help ensure a smoother application process and a more enjoyable visit to Canada.
